AllMusic Review by

Although it does not state it anywhere, the music on this CD reissue of the original LP was not taken from the soundtrack of the remarkable television special The Sound of Jazz but from a recording session held a few days earlier. The personnel and arrangements are similar but the excitement level is not quite at the same level. The Red Allen All-Stars are quite spirited on two songs, Billie Holiday does an effective job on "Fine and Mellow" and there are also features for the Count Basie All-Stars, Jimmy Giuffre and pianst Mal Waldron (in Thelonious Monk's place). Good music but the soundtrack (last put out on LP by the Pumpkin label) and especially the video are superior.
