Leaving out most of the biggest stars from Motown and Stax, K-Tel has combed the '60s and early-'70s soul terrain to bring you some of the era's key sides. The package logic may be fuzzy (30 tracks on three discs?), but the budget price is certainly right. From Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" to Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff," the dancefloor fillers here are consistently top-notch if more than a tad well-worn. But for those seeking a fairly good survey of the era's soul charts, Soul Box will make for a very enjoyable introduction.
