AllMusic Review by

This three-LP set from the early '70s is an interesting survey into the history of the modern saxophone, from advanced swing to the avant-garde. All but two of the 25 selections (leased recordings by Lester Young and Charlie Parker) are from the Impulse catalog with such major stylists as Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Sonny Stitt, Paul Gonsalves, Sonny Rollins, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster (a classic "Someone to Watch over Me"), John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Eric Dolphy (on Max Roach's "Mendacity"), Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, Joe Henderson, Sonny Simmons, John Gilmore, Albert Ayler, John Klemmer, Marion Brown, Dewey Redman, Sam Rivers and Gato Barbieri in addition to Prez and Bird being heard from.
