AllMusic Review by

Not entirely satisfied with the original version of The Gospels (also released as The Word & the Gospels), Wakeman rewrote and re-recorded it, subtitling it "A Modern Oratorio." The pieces of the original have been rearranged to present the life of Jesus chronologically, and a new piece has been added: "The Cross," which Wakeman called "the best piece of music I have ever written" in his autobiography Say Yes!. The lack of the original's electronic percussion and a refined atmosphere give the new version a more classical feel. Wakeman himself is even more subdued than on the original, but he sounds more at ease and adds a few characteristic keyboard flourishes.
