Washington, D.C.'s Darkest Hour made their recording debut with 1996's The Misanthrope EP, which introduced their positively savage blend of extreme metal styles topped with the lyrical intelligence of their hometown's hardcore legacy. More significantly for a first effort, every one of its six cuts has something to recommend it: whether it's the combination of insidious melodies and quasi-black metal blastbeat barrages contained in standouts "Faith Like Suicide" and "Crossroads," or the tenebrous grooves featured in slower efforts like "Vise" and "Looking Forward (To the End)."
