On first thought, Splash Hits sounds like the soundtrack to a girly Saturday morning cartoon. The truth is, it is the soundtrack to a girly Saturday morning cartoon. That is not to say that young children will not enjoy it, but Mermaid fans who have "Part of Your World" in their minds will be rightly disappointed. Yup, it's Jodi Benson, the same Ariel voice from the movie, but Menken and Ashman have been replaced by an array of Disney composers and lyricists who would do great justice to all by allowing no lesser standard than what was originally set with the 1989 feature. There are bouncy tunes like "Sing a New Song" and warm ballads like "Just a Little Love" and "In My Blue Backyard," as well as appearances by Sebastian the crab, but overall Splash Hits rings in similar sound to Barbie commercials. For a slightly heftier listen, try 1992's Songs From the Sea.
