Volume two in this series demonstrates how thin the line is between inspiration born out of necessity and self-indulgence out of desperation. Where Konishi, Kubota, and Sakurai came up with delicious melodies and arrangements on the first, the second volume finds them mostly creating backing tracks for the ramblings of their radio show guests ("The Contemporary Cultural Course," "Sakurai Fan Club," "Take the Soul Train") or half-finished fragments of ideas ("Hamburger," "Masked Confession"). Only "Emancipate," the final track, has something going for it -- a Fela Kuti-like jam quite faithfully rendered -- but even this is ruined by a vocal delivered in tannoy-speaker tinniness. A frustrating follow-up.
