Although given top billing, The Modern Jazz Quartet is actually only featured on half of this reissue LP of material from the MPS label. The MJQ performs three complex John Lewis originals composed for the French film No Sun in Venice along with the more straightforward "J.B. Blues." Arranger Eddie Sauter leads a German orchestra on three pieces that are influenced by contemporary classical music, utilize quite a few percussive devices and feature the tenor of Hans Koller. In addition, writer Andre Hodeir directs a smaller group through his complicated "Paradoxe II" and Duke Jordan's "Jordu." Overall this set is not all that essential (the move toward a "Third Stream" between jazz and classical music never really caught on) but has its interesting moments.
