AllMusic Review by

As ludicrously lavish as any box set could be, Sony/Legacy’s 2010 set The Genius of Miles Davis rounds up the label’s eight acclaimed, award-winning steel-spined box sets of Miles’ complete Columbia studio recordings -- The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings with Gil Evans; Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-'68; The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions; Miles Davis & John Coltrane: The Complete Columbia Recordings, 1955-1961; The Complete In a Silent Way Sessions; The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions; Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings 1963-1964; The Complete On the Corner Sessions -- and houses them in a custom-made trumpet case, adding a replica of Miles’ “Gustat” Heim 2 mouthpiece, an art lithograph, and an exclusive T-shirt as high-end collector bait. These, along with the case, are the only items unavailable elsewhere so perhaps this is not for the devotees who purchased the eight sets as they were released, nor is it for the hardcore who want all of Miles’ Columbia recordings because this misses the complete live sets Legacy has put out, as well as anything recorded after the On the Corner sessions. But for those with deep wallets and expensive tastes, this is a handsome indulgence.
