With his 1980 Hollywood debut The Final Countdown, composer John Scott achieves a careful and compelling balance between traditional orchestral sensibilities and futuristic electronic elements, a synthesis that neatly underscores the film's time-travel narrative. Scott proves as adept with the thrills as he is with the chills, creating rousing, two-fisted action themes and strange, portentous soundscapes that perfectly complement the onscreen time-warp sequences. Like most soundtracks from the era in question, The Final Countdown definitely shows its age, but its thematic complexity and textural mastery remain impressive.
