"Udi" Hrant Kerkulian is perhaps the finest Turkish ud player of the century, both as virtuoso and as innovator. These two sets bring together a great range of his recordings from the late ‘20s to the 1950s, many of them on U.S.-based Turkish labels. Besides wonderful ud-playing, from traditional to modernist, they include some rare recordings of his fiddling. Unfortunately, the otherwise thorough notes don't make it clear what cuts were recorded when.
