This record is a bit difficult to get into. Frank Carlberg is an advanced and somewhat dramatic post-bop pianist who is teamed with fine tenor saxophonist Chris Cheek, bassist Ben Street, and drummer Kenny Wollesen. The wild card is singer Christine Correa, who comes across as a bit pompous in her delivery, not helped out by the complexity of Carlberg's 11 originals, which put to music 11 rather downbeat and sometimes morbid poems. Taken in small doses, this date succeeds, but the lack of variety overall makes this a difficult set to swallow whole in one sitting.
