This is an amazing body of music, and not just thanks to the presence of the complete orchestral underscore of The Blob (1958) -- though that's pretty impressive, in and of itself. The Blob (And Other Creepy Sounds) not only offers Ralph Carmichael's complete score as it appears in the movie, but includes the unused main title music (which was replaced, in the final release cut of the movie, by "The Blob" by the Five Blobs -- which is also included here); the latter is marvelously effective, and ought to have been salvaged in some form at the time, but it is great to finally hear it properly and intact, even 50 years late. The film score has, at long last, received the treatment that it deserves, in terms of fidelity and quality, and a serious presentation, and by itself would make this CD worth owning. But the producers have filled out the running time with "stock music" from the Valentino Production Music Library, an oft-used body of stock music that was heard in innumerable cartoons, marionette vehicles, commercials, and low-budget film and television productions from the mid-'50s through the end of the '60s. The composers represented include Mario Nascimbene and other European figures, but the most notable music here is by the renowned Roger Roger -- his "Whimsical Tale" will call to mind countless hours of children's television and feature films in which it was used, and is worth the price of admission by itself, and it's only one highlight of this section of the CD's programming. The audio quality is excellent, everything presented in full fidelity, and the material also comes with full and highly detailed annotation. This one is not only a keeper, but makes a superb gift as well, and not just for soundtrack enthusiasts -- any baby boomer's memories will resonate to large sections of this CD, and some of it is so closely tied musically to many fondly remembered TV productions, that the reactions could be very strong.
