The Austin, TX-based duo of Brian Willey and Carlos Orozco, operating as the Black Drum Set, makes music that might be expected from that name. The drum patterns are paramount, augmented by various synthesizer and other sounds, with occasional humming or chanted vocals that tend to repeat the titles or variations thereof. ("The White House is on fire," voices repeat over and over in the closing track, "The Whitehouse on Fire.") The other sounds include a rainstorm and, perhaps, a passing airplane in "Two Places, Different Times," and "A Dangerous Drive" features a calmer, more ambient performance, so that at times the music is more like sound effects or background music. Other tracks are livelier. But this is experimental music that has a cumulative effect and creates a mood, usually a dark and percussive mood, as the name suggests.
