Drummer Jon Hazilla is not exactly a household name but the participation of two notable players as sidemen (pianist James Williams and bassist Ray Drummond) attest to both the style and the quality of the music heard on his second Cadence release. Two selections ("Pancakes from Meductic" and "Freddie Waits for No One") are unaccompanied drum solos that hold on to one's attention. Otherwise Hazilla primarily takes a supportive role, featuring many fine solos from Williams and Drummond on two of his originals and obscurities from Jimmy Garrison and Phineas Newborn along with "Naima" and "Old Devil Moon." Many recordings by piano trios are released each year. Jon Hazilla's effort is a cut above most due to the close communication between the musicians, excellent pacing in the material and the compatibility of the player's styles.
