While there are a couple of previously unavailable songs thrown in for good measure, The Big Combo is a collection of tracks pulled from past New Bomb Turks albums. Lackluster live takes on old material are also included, intended as an incentive for fans to buy this compilation of (mostly) previously available material, it seems. Overall, it seems fairly self-indulgent, not to mention boring, to release an album comprised of songs that aren't really very hard to find (several are culled from the exceptionally easy to find Turks releases At Rope's End and Scared Straight). And the selection of songs included on the album hardly seems to imply that The Big Combo is intended as any sort of "greatest-hits" package. The fact that The Big Combo is so underwhelming is even more disappointing in part because the band's 1995 collection of true rarities and gems, Pissing Out the Poison, did such an excellent job of cataloging the Turks' extensive collection of B-sides, singles, covers, and the like.
