This slim but potent mix of vintage harmony vocal sides spotlights Chess' roll in a market that was often dominated by the Atlantic and Mercury labels. Cut before and during Chess' run of electric blues hits, the mix here takes on such legends as the Moonglows ("In My Diary"), the pre-fame Flamingos ("Dream of a Lifetime"), and the post-fame Ravens ("Give Me (A Simple Prayer)"). Also on hand, a young Four Tops poised for Motown gold, the Students, and the Chess brothers' first signing, the Dozier Boys. Better doo-wop collections are out there, but at a bargain price, this album could be the perfect introduction to all that '50s fun.
