While this and the first volume of Chess' vintage rock & roll series should really be combined on one disc, The Best of Chess Rock & Roll, Vol. 2 still delivers enough in the way of '50s gems to provide a satisfying listening experience. This time out, though, the fare is decidedly more pop, erring on the doo wop side and mostly eschewing the gritty end of the spectrum. Save for a song apiece by Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, the majority here is in the dreamy vein of such album cuts as the Jaynetts' "Sally, Go 'Round the Roses" and the Monotones' "The Book of Love." More inspiration point than sock-hop rumble.
