AllMusic Review by

After Motown dropped Benzino when his debut album flopped -- also partly because of his shady affiliation with The Source -- they assigned the album's masters to Surrender Records, who then re-released the album as The Benzino Remix Project. The idea was to repackage the album and try to give it a second life. The problem, though, is that this "remix" album is essentially the same as the original with only a few exceptions: most notably a different version of "Figadoh" featuring Busta Rhymes and M.O.P., a different version of "Boottee" featuring G. Dep and Fabolous, and an added remix of "Bang ta Dis" featuring Prodigy and Bars & Hooks. Besides these three exceptions, The Benzino Remix Project differs very little from The Benzino Project. So, as a result, it's best to view this as a re-release rather than a remix album. Anyone who buys both will be quite upset at the almost unnoticable differences. You can't help but feel a bit resentful about the deceptive nature of this re-release. It's intended to be viewed as a remix album, for sure -- particularly since it arrived around the same time that the "this is the remix!" phenomenon was sweeping through the rap industry in summer 2002. No, this isn't a remix album. It's simply a revised edition of Benzino's disappointing debut album. It makes few, if any, improvements to remedy what made The Benzino Project so disappointing in the first place.
