This out-of-print double-LP gives listeners an excellent overview as to altoist Hank Crawford's Atlantic recordings. The 21 selections (which are programmed in somewhat random order) are full of soulful and melodic performances and, although the supporting cast is generally strong (often including tenor saxophonist David Newman), the focus is mostly on Crawford's soulful alto throughout. Highlights include "The Peeper," "Shake-A-Plenty," "Please Send Me Someone to Love," "Dat Dere," "Mr. Blues," "Two Years of Torture" and "Makin' Whoopee"; the latter is one of several numbers in which Crawford also plays some effective piano. The twofer has to an extent been eclipsed by Rhino's two-CD set although some of the music has not yet been reissued on CD.
