This superb series of compilation releases could be of great assistance plugging holes in record collections, especially when it comes to the many different styles and schools of avant-garde music. Producer, editor, and series honcho Steve Peters really scrambled some eggs on this particular entry, allowing listeners the opportunity to sample creations as diverse as the eccentric composition of Philip Corner to the ruminations of guitarist Derek Bailey, once again at leisure in his own London flat as yet another set of neighbors decides to move out to avoid the sound of home-recording sessions such as this. One reason Aerial #5: A Journal in Sound is worth securing all by itself is the presence of a rare recording by the wonderful Australian group Machine for Making Sense, featuring the talents of ace sound-effects editor Rik Rue and Stevie Wishart on the unmatched hurdy-gurdy.
