Bill Mays' first quintet recording is a showcase for the pianist's crisp arrangements and tasty originals. The strong cast of supporting musicians, flugelhornist Tom Harrell, tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore, bassist Andy Simpkins, and drummer Shelly Manne (on one of his last dates before his death the following year), have a great chemistry with the leader, especially exploring the easygoing nature of the title track, Mays' exotic "Mavrodaphne's Dance," or his bittersweet "Goodbye California." The energetic playful approach to "'S Wonderful" is refreshing, while his interpretation of Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" is particularly poignant.
