AllMusic Review by

The music of the Texas artist Sam "Lightnin'"Hopkins was a link between acoustic country blues and electrified urban blues styles. Hopkins played both acoustic and electric guitar with a spacious, crepuscular sound that could lunge and bite like a coiled snake; his voice was an unpolished stray-cat yowl that was by turns wise, ominous, and joyous. This well-assembled, informative four-CD box set includes a 48-page booklet, recording details, and rare pictures. It features a wide variety of Hopkins' early recordings from between 1946 and 1955, such as the desolate "Give Me Central 209," the menacing-sounding "Long Way From Texas," and the bleak "You Caused My Heart to Weep."
