AllMusic Review by

This double LP is the best Claude Thornhill collection thus far since little of his music has yet appeared on CD. After his theme song (the haunting "Snowfall") and a 1937 recording of "Stop! You're Breaking My Heart" with singer Maxine Sullivan, Thornhill's 1941-1942 and 1946-1947 orchestras are well featured on this set. There is an emphasis on Gil Evans' classic arrangements, and the 32 selections do give one a well-rounded picture of how unique and versatile the Thornhill ensemble was during its prime years. Highlights include "Portrait of a Guinea Farm," "Autumn Nocturne," "There's a Small Hotel," "A Sunday Kind of Love," two versions of "Thrivin' on a Riff," "Robbin's Nest," "Donna Lee," and "Yardbird Suite."
