Jerry Newman, a jazz fan in the early '40s, happened to be in the right place at the right time and, because he owned a disc recorder, he was able to document some otherwise totally lost jam sessions during that era. This Xanadu LP has one number ("Hold the Phone") featuring Count Basie with a septet that also includes trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and tenorsaxophonist Dick Wilson. Otherwise the rest of the music originated in the legendary Minton's Playhouse. Hot Lips Page plays "I Found a New Baby" with a quintet that also includes pianist Thelonious Monk, and the other four numbers star trumpeter Roy Eldridge; Joe Guy sometimes plays second trumpet and Monk is on two of the songs. The performances are erratic (most of the unidentified players are not so hot) but there are enough exciting moments to justify this LP's purchase by bop fanatics.
