This single was U2's only in support of the band's 1998 Best of 1980-1990 CD. There were two versions of the Sweetest Thing CD single released, and both had a version called "The Single Mix." "The Sweetest Thing" originally appeared as a B-side to the 1987 Where the Streets Have No Name single. The song was the most popular non-LP track by the band and received much airplay over the years, so U2 re-recorded it for this collection. The second of the two CD singles includes two live songs, "Stories for Boys" and "Out of Control," both from the band's March, 1981, Boston show. This concert had been mined for B-sides as early as the U.S. I Will Follow single. A single released in conjunction with U2's first greatest-hits CD was a perfect time to open up the vaults and give the fans two superb live gems.
