AllMusic Review by

Sunrain: The Virgin Years is a collection of Ashra's best work from their four albums on Virgin Records: New Age of Earth, Blackouts, Correlations, and Belle Alliance. Manuel Göttsching plays all of the instruments on six of the tracks. Harald Grosskopf and Lutz Ulbrich accompany Göttsching on the other seven tracks. This is heavy-duty Berlin-school electronica. Göttsching's original claim to fame was as the guitarist for Ash Ra Tempel. Through his association with Klaus Schulze in that band, Göttsching became exposed to synths and other electronics. This music also has crossover elements. Rock & roll guitars and rhythms compliment the electronics. The soundscape shifts from dreamy and ambient to hardcore electronica to rock & roll. Those shifts are seamless and effortless. This is a good disc; it will appeal to fans of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze, Paul Haslinger, and Johannes Schmoelling. It is important for its historical perspectives.
