Memphis, readily acknowledged as the birthplace of rock & roll, is NOT frequently name-checked as a hotbed of aggressive heavy-metal activity, but the ultra -heavy Southern Doom outfit Nights Like These aim to change that. SUNLIGHT AT SECONDHAND showcases the young band's dynamic, evocative compositions, which range from the rapid-fire blowtorch "Samsara" to slower, dread-inducing monoliths such as "Black the Sun" and "Bay of Pigs." Fans of artier, complex bands like Neurosis and Isis will be able to latch on to the shifting textures and colors in the music, but people who just want to hear something heavy won't be disappointed, either.
