This is the almost entirely instrumental soundtrack to a documentary about surfers in Hawaii in the late '70s, Stylemasters. Newly recorded to accompany vintage surf footage, the soundtrack cleverly avoids all of the usual surf music clichés in favor of epic instrumental post-rock pitched somewhere between Yo La Tengo's extended meditations and the noisier build and release of bands like Explosions in the Sky and Do Make Say Think. The vintage '70s vibe of the footage occasionally translates into a loose, noodly stoner rock vibe that suits the Afros-and-baggies look of the film's subjects; this means that without the film to look at, parts of these lengthy tunes occasionally devolve into aimless vibing. Still, it's an effective vehicle for anyone looking to bliss out for around 45 minutes or so.
