AllMusic Review by

Australian drummer Virgil Donati was mainly an underground drumming sensation for much of the late '80s and early '90s, until more of his work gradually began to be heard in the United States. After Donati was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer magazine with the billing "legend in the making," aspiring and even accomplished drummers began to seek out his recordings. Stretch is his first independently produced recording on which he plays all instruments. Despite the presence of miscellaneous percussion and some keyboards and looping, this is really a drum recording -- although perhaps it should be thought of as a lesson in rhythm rather than just drums. Terry Bozzio has pulled off this same feat without sacrificing musicality, and the same applies here. Undoubtedly, Donati's reputation as a "legend' was based upon what was recorded here. This session will appeal mostly to drummers (of any style), but anyone who appreciates creative improvisation is also encouraged to seek out this rare recording.
