Straight Outta Cleveland is a thoroughly entertaining hodgepodge of songs by Cleveland bands from the Raspberries and the James Gang to Devo and Pere Ubu. Musically, it's all over the map, with hard rock and power-pop alternating with bar bands, avant-punk and garage rock, but its ramshackle approach actually works, illustrating what a diverse and talent-rich city Cleveland is. Only the Dead Boys are represented by their most familiar song ("Sonic Reducer"), but that doesn't matter, because Straight Outta Cleveland intends to capture the spirit of the city, not its greatest hits, and on that level it works very well indeed.
