Andre Bush's music and guitar playing are often introspective, thoughtful, and quiet, but never sleepy. On Start from Silence, he plays the three-part title cut unaccompanied as well as the second version of "You Are Who You Love." Otherwise, he is joined by Bruce Williamson on bass clarinet and soprano, bassist Peter Barshay, and drummer Alan Hall, with pianist Art Lande on four of the six group performances. Sometimes Bush's playing is rockish, as on "(Hand in The) Cookie Jar," and some of the group pieces display plenty of energy, but there is always a thoughtful lyricism to Bush's music that makes repeated listenings worthwhile.
