AllMusic Review by

Recorded in one day under the watch of legendary producer Chris Stamey (and originally planned as a demo), Thad Cockrell & the Starlite Country Band's debut shows genuine promise for a newcomer who knows how to hurt your heart with twang. (And how to line up talent: Yes that's Whiskeytown alum Caitlin Cary duetting with Thad on Buck Owens' "Together Again." Other alt-country notables include Cary's former bandmate Skillet Gilmore on drums and Tift Merritt on backup vocals.) Vocally, Cockrell possesses the kind of high, lonesome warble that can raise the hair on your neck and put a tear in your eye, while, thematically, his muse is so heartbroken it's a wonder he can even pick up a guitar. The album strikes a nice balance between not-so-rowdy honky tonk and heart-worn balladry.
