The Chico Hamilton Quintet debuted on this important Pacific Jazz LP. One of the last significant West Coast jazz units, Hamilton's band had Buddy Collette on reeds (flute, tenor, clarinet and alto), guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Carson Smith, the drummer/leader and, most importantly, cellist Fred Katz. A chamber jazz unit that hinted in spots at classical music, this cool jazz band was quite popular for a few years. Unfortunately, most of Hamilton's early recordings have yet to be reissued on CD, but this LP (which has been repackaged several times) can sometimes be located. Highlights include "A Nice Day," "I Want to Be Happy," "My Funny Valentine" and Chico Hamilton's classic feature on "Blue Sands."
