One of the best volumes of the series, assembling some of soul's most emotional and expressive female performers. Running from Motown imitations to novelties to pop-soul to raw deep soul to blues-soul, it has outstanding cuts by Etta James, Koko Taylor, Maxine Brown, Fontella Bass, Barbara George, Gloria Jones, and Shirley Ellis. Lorraine Ellison, Linda Jones, and Patti Drew are names only known to serious soul fans, but their tracks are just as fine as the ones by more famous names, and the two selections by Aretha Franklin are among her more obscure ("Lee Cross," from her Columbia era, and the 1968 B-side "You Send Me").
