AllMusic Review by

Consisting of over a dozen volumes, the Bellevue label's Soul series is riddled with poor live recordings and woefully inferior studio re-recordings, the latter of which are not specified in the track listings. These should be avoided, as there are many series and box sets -- such as Soul Hits of the '70s, Sweet Soul Music, and Can You Dig It? The '70s Soul Experience -- that are legitimate. Soul: It's a Man's Man's Man's World contains substandard recordings of the Jackson 5's "Soul Jerk," Percy Sledge's "It Tears Me Up," Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," and the Blue Notes' cover of the O'Jays' "For the Love of Money."
