Three months after his mentor Cal Tjader's death, conga master Poncho Sanchez began his long string of Concord Picante recordings. Although he had led a couple of earlier sessions for Discovery, Sonando was really the beginning of Sanchez's notable solo career. Four talented horn players (including trumpeter Steve Huffsteter and altoist Gary Foster) join Sanchez, two other percussionists, pianist Charlie Otwell and bassist Tony Banda on the high-quality Afro-Cuban date. There are also several vocals from guest singer Jose Perico Hernandez. Highlights include "A Night In Tunisia," and a feature for Foster on "The Summer Knows," and "Cal's Pals."
