Jaki Byard is always an enjoyable pianist in any group, but he is at his best as a soloist. His second solo outing has a good deal of New Orleans influences, from his percussive one man street parade "New Orleans Strut" to his romantic, glissando-filled "A Basin Street Ballad" and nostalgic take of "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?" Byard's unusual arrangement of "Hello Young Lovers" would frustrate the most talented singer with its dense chords and wild changes, but it's the best example of what make his style of playing very unique. Long overdue to be reissued, this album may yet appear in Fantasy's limited edition OJC series.
