AllMusic Review by

Judging from the byline ("40 Phat Joints and Smooth Rolling Beats") as well as its nonambiguous title, it's quite apparent what target market Ministry of Sound was shooting for when licensing the Smokin Beats compilation. Wasting no time with subtle suggestion, the first disc dives in headfirst with Afroman's frat-boy anthem "Because I Got High" and moves into more tolerable territory, courtesy of OutKast and Q-Tip. And from there it's a survey of hip-hop courtesy of longtime Ninja Tune label stars DJ Food and Herbaliser (there's that theme again!) and downtempo. Disc two continues onto more of the same territories, making slight but necessary detours (Moby) along the way to ensure accessibility for casual listeners as well as seasoned downtempo listeners. While various recreational activities may or may not enhance the listening experience of this compilation, it's not absolutely essential, and it should be noted that most songs found here definitely hold their own water without the aid of any supplements.
