A German album featuring drinking songs in celebration of an anniversary might sound like something for a private CD-R run at a family reunion -- but when it's the Shitkatapult label celebrating ten years of its own dance music variants, that's something else. With packaging, art, and essays all dedicated one way or another to the noble art of enjoying demon drink, SmaShits' song lineup logically fits right in, covering everything from covers of classics (or at the least, songs that are known enough to the label's home audience) to new songs specifically written for the collection. Thus, on the one hand, there's the Neil Diamond via UB40 chestnut "Red Red Wine" given a dubstep reworking by Fenin & Gorbi -- an obvious enough "haw haw" joke, maybe, but it does work, with the lyrics delivered here in contrast to the music rather than snuggly fitting into it. Other covers include "Steifheit" given a post-Chicks on Speed/Le Tigre bit of blasting sass via Das Bierbeben, and Anaphie vs. Phlex's demolition of a song by German easy listening legend Heino, "Caramba Caracho ein Whiskey." In contrast to all this is something like "Allein in der Bar," a bit of self-consciously goofy lounge/schlager sass by Helge Schneider, and Dirty Dishes' hilarious bit of indie guitar lo-fi merriment "Trink ein Cola." All this and T. Raumschiere and Ellen Allien working together on a track called "Diving in Whiskey" too.
