For better or for worse, Sleighride captures on vinyl the experience of holiday carolers singing outside your door on Christmas Eve -- for a short time, they're pleasant and charming enough, but their glassy-eyed cheerfulness quickly grows thin, and after a while you just want them off your goddamn porch. Randy Van Horne's arrangements of modern-day favorites like "Sleigh Ride," "Jingle Bells," and "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" possess little of the creativity and sass that buoyed the group's earlier RCA efforts, settling for the sincerity and solemnity that so often undermine seasonal projects of this kind -- like fruitcake and eggnog, a little of Sleighride goes a long way.
