While indie-rock darling Juliana Hatfield kicked off a promising solo career in the early 1990s, following the break-up of her beloved band, the Blake Babies, subsequent years found her star fading. Happily, the Boston-based singer-songwriter caught a second wind during the new millennium, and 2007's SITTIN' IN A TREE finds Hatfield continuing a revitalized streak, this time with fellow Bostonian performer Frank Smith, who helps to give the EP a rootsy alt-country feel (see "A Beer and a Shot," a twangy, fuzzed-out number). Recalling some of her work with former beau Evan Dando (Lemonheads) and Giant Sand, the loose, organic arrangements on SITTIN' work quite well with Hatfield's perpetually girlish voice, making for a another fine addition to her post-'90s catalogue.
