AllMusic Review by

This sampler, Shenanigan: The Tunes, introduces listeners to the instrumental side of Shenanigan, a six-member Celtic band based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. And a very pleasing selection it is, too. Though longtime fans may already have these tunes from the band's debut album, Mortal Daze, this collection still serves as an enjoyable introduction for new listeners, because Shenanigan is quite talented and skillful with instrumental music. From the lively and cheerful "Tommy Coens" to the vibrant "The Battle of Aughrim" to the engaging jigs of "Coleraine's Set," the music lilts, swirls, and sets feet to dancing. "Last Tango in Tipperary" is a distinctive change of pace, infusing Spanish-flavored rhythms into this primarily Celtic collection, to quite pleasing effect. Shenanigan definitely has a polished and effective instrumental presentation, and having heard this sampler, both new and old fans of Celtic music will be watching for the group's follow-up releases.
