An excellent drummer based in Bakersfield, CA, Wally Leask loves playing hard bop. On his debut album as a leader, he offers swinging support to vibraphonist Jon Nagourney, pianist Terry Trotter, and bassist Bob Maize. With the exception of "Over the Rainbow" and "Ain't Misbehavin'," the repertoire consists of superior obscurities by jazz musicians. There are four songs by Hank Mobley and tunes by Mary Lou Williams ("Lonely Moments"), Sonny Clark, John Lewis ("Delauney's Dilemma"), Ray Drummond, and Gigi Gryce. Far from mere re-creations, these versions often match if not exceed the original recordings. It is a particular pleasure to hear the underrated Nagourney in this setting. An impressive debut by Wally Leask.
