A sequel to their acclaimed four-disc series Sentimental Journey, Rhino's Santamental Journey: Pop Vocal Christmas Classics is a wonderful collection of 16 traditional pop holiday tunes from the '50s. Since Rhino has the leverage to license from a variety of different labels, Santamental Journey is able to feature a number of classics on one disc -- Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," Judy Garland's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," Jimmy Durante's "Frosty the Snowman" -- plus a wealth of carols that aren't necessarily the best-known versions, but are nevertheless fine performances from great performers like Jack Jones, the Drifters, Doris Day, Peggy Lee, Al Martino, Jo Stafford, Rosemary Clooney, Dick Haymes, the Ray Charles Singers, and the Mitch Ayres Orchestra. Anyone looking for a collection of pop holiday tunes from the '50s would be hard pressed to find a better disc than this.
