If E.U.'s seminal hit "Da Butt" was the commercial apex of the Washington, D.C., go-go culture, then their Rock Yuh Butt LP is the beginning of the scene's steep decline. Ambitious but frustrating, the record stretches its songs far past the breaking point, with neither the ideas nor the energy necessary to support running times in excess of ten minutes per cut. Almost each performance is something less than the sum of its parts. For every funky drum break or diamond-sharp horn flourish, there's a self-indulgent guitar solo or a wan melody that undercuts the music's kinetic impact.
