Although this looks at first like a typical Brazilian jazz set, much of the music is actually a melodic brand of post-bop music. Guitarist Dave Stryker and bassist Andy McKee work together quite well, while reedman Steve Slagle (a guest in the trio who is on every selection) plays with plenty of fire on alto and soprano. Most of the Brazilian aspects to the music are provided by Manolo Badrena, who not only plays drums, percussion and occasional guitar, but contributes some exotic vocals, particularly on "Cameroun" and "What You Want." Slagle (who, in particular, is in top form) and guitarist Stryker get plenty of solo space and the music is both colorful and explorative, often utilizing catchy rhythms. "Africano" is particularly memorable while "Shanti" is a change-of-pace; an exploration of Indian-style music. Recommended.
