AllMusic Review by

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss' birth, Deutsche Grammophon has packaged his complete operas in a limited edition box set of classic recordings that have been known and loved for decades. Gathered here are performances conducted by such great Strauss authorities as Georg Solti, Karl Böhm, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Joseph Keilberth, and Wolfgang Sawallisch, and the recordings feature the voices of Birgit Nilsson, Lucia Popp, Régine Crespin, Yvonne Minton, Helen Donath, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Cheryl Studer, Bryn Terfel, and many others. Also reissued and included with the operas is Jessye Norman's album of the Four Last Songs and orchestrated songs with Kurt Masur. For new fans of Strauss, this is a convenient way to acquire all 15 operas at one go, though it is a sizable risk if the listener isn't prepared for the variety of musical styles employed in these works. For example, the violent, psychological probing of Salome and Elektra is more experimental and challenging than the more refined and elegant music in Der Rosenkavalier and Capriccio, so it behooves neophytes to sample thoroughly before purchasing. Longtime admirers of Strauss have a different problem, because they are likely to have many of these performances in their libraries already. Because they are all historical recordings that have been in the catalog for many years, there are no rarities to entice the Strauss collector to buy them again.
