Say what you will about George W. Bush, he's done more to stir righteous dudgeon on the left than anybody since the days when Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher made it seem like the world were going to end by next Tuesday. The first album by the defiantly queer spoken word duo Athens Boys Choir is good old-fashioned '80s-style anger infused with up-to-the-minute gender politics and, thankfully, a sly and sarcastic sense of humor that saves the mono-named Rocket and Katz from sounding like nonsatiric versions of Rik the People's Poet from the U.K. sitcom The Young Ones. Unfortunately, political art always has the problem of preaching only to the choir, so to speak, which means that the intended targets of sharp-witted and thoughtful pieces like "Promises Like Rain" will most likely never hear them, much less consider their point of view.
