As would be expected for an "Especially for Youth" album, the 2001 compilation is hit and miss. The problem is trying to fit spiritual themes inside contemporary tunes without jumping the lines -- and the lines are way too close together to make for anything memorable. Several songs get close, though; John McVey's "I'll Be" is his usual outing, an adult contemporary ballad that somehow feels newer and more alive than it actually is. The musical and lyrical peak is without a doubt producer Greg Simpson's mature confessional "Growing Young," which was also included on Highway Records' Welcome to Brigham collection. There is a ton of homegrown talent on this album that somehow fails to produce anything of much worth. Latter-day Saints should recognize these up-and-coming artists, yet there are few songs worth remembering.
